One of the mission’s commitments was to meet with the board of directors of the New Development Bank (NDB). The institution, known as the BRICS bank, has a broad role in fostering the economic development of the countries that are part of the group. In Pará, for example, the BRICS Bank (NDB) is analyzing the release of funds for basic sanitation works in the municipalities surrounding the Trans-Amazonian highway, which, if approved, could increase the region’s urbanization rate from 3 to 30%. In Maranhão, the bank is evaluating the request for financing for paving the MA 006 highway, an investment that will integrate three highways that make up a production area known as the soybean ring. The two states, together with Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, are part of MATOPIBA, a large agricultural frontier whose potential was widely reinforced by the president during the mission. In a meeting with the vice president of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Food, Livestock and Cattle (CCFNA), the group’s interest in the fruit market was highlighted, especially in its derivatives, such as chocolates and other products processed with Brazilian fruits, such as Cupuaçu.“This shows an essential need that FIETO defends for Tocantins, which is the development of the processing industry. In addition to adding greater value to our production, the processing of products finds open markets all over the world, as we saw with this Chamber in China,” Pires said about the meeting with the vice president of the Chamber, Rong Weidong, and managers Ally Wang and Jiang Shan. The group will participate in a food trade fair in São Paulo in June. The China Investment Association (IAC), a company that invests in commodities, is also scheduled to come to Brazil in April of this year. At the event, the group will move forward with the decisions made after the meeting with this group to hold a seminar to further explore information about Tocantins and to sign an agreement to regulate the scope of the negotiations. The giant machine manufacturer, Lonking, was visited by Roberto Pires. In 2017 alone, the factory produced 40,000 forklifts and held 27% of the Chinese market for mechanical shovels. In Brazil, Lonking already sells its products to states such as Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul and Espírito Santo. Invited by Roberto Pires, the company’s director, Mars Cai, showed interest and will confirm a visit to Tocantins during the period of the largest agrotechnology fair in the northern region, Agrotins.Roberto Pires also met with representatives of financial institutions such as CDB (equivalent to the Brazilian BNDES) and the China Society for WTO Studies. The mission was supported by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).
